Elderberries contain a mixture of anthocyanins and vitamins that may support a healthy inflammatory response. Research has shown that anthocyanins, molecules that help give elderberry its purple color, are highly bioavailable and may be able to prevent oxidative damage in endothelial (skin-type) cells.

In some studies, elderberry has been shown to have antiviral and antimicrobial properties. Studies have also suggested that elderberry may potentially reduce the amount of upper respiratory symptoms and the duration of influenza symptoms.
