15 plant-based enzymes that work across all meal types

Bromelain

This digestive enzyme found in pineapple helps break down proteins. Bromelain may also help decrease the amount of pro-inflammatory cytokines in cells in individuals with inflammatory bowel disease.†

Enzyme

Vegetarian Pancreatin

Pancreatin is a combination of lipases (enzymes that break down fat) and proteases (enzymes that break down protein). Vegan/vegetarian pancreatin has been found to be effective both in the high-acidity environment of the stomach and the more basic environment of the intestines, so you get support throughout the digestive system.

Enzyme

Bacillus subtilis

This spore-based probiotic may produce digestive enzymes and has been used to support health after taking antibiotics.† Studies suggest that B. subtilis can help promote the health of your intestinal wall, which can get damaged when foods are poorly digested.†

Frequently Asked

How’s a digestive enzyme different from a probiotic?

Digestive enzymes help break down your food into absorbable nutrients while probiotics help rebalance the bacteria in your gut. Probiotics help cultivate a healthy environment within which your digestive enzymes can be their most effective. We include 1 billion Bacillus Subtilis probiotics in Break It Down to specifically help maintain the health of your intestinal wall, which can be damaged when foods are not digested completely, however, we do not consider Break It Down a replacement for a dedicated probiotic supplement like Trust Your Gut.

What makes Break It Down different from other digestive enzymes?

Most enzymes come from animal sources. Ours are plant-based and stable across a wide pH range, so they work in both your stomach and intestines.†

When should I take Break It Down?

Take one capsule right before your biggest meal or any time you anticipate digestive discomfort.

How do I know if I have an enzyme deficiency?

Your own personal experience of your digestion is going to be your best indicator. While there are some laboratory tests available to test digestive enzymes (from stool samples, blood, or breath), there is still disagreement on which test is best and how accurate the results are. So, your best judge is you. Do you experience painful bloating or heaviness after certain meals? These are signs that your body may not be breaking your food down properly. A digestive enzyme may help ease those symptoms.

Is Break It Down safe to take when pregnant or breastfeeding?

We recommend that you consult with your doctor before taking Break It Down when pregnant or breastfeeding. There’s no evidence that the ingredients are harmful during these times, but there also hasn’t been sufficient evidence to show that they are safe to take. Familiarize yourself with the ingredients and speak with your doctor.

How do you make your enzymes?

Our enzymes are fermented from fungi with the exception of papain and bromelain, which are extracted from papaya and pineapple, respectively. Our formula is based on lab experiments and research, along with years of experience in developing a holistic digestive enzyme.

Is Break It Down safe for kids?

Many of our customers like to share their digestive enzymes with their children, but check with your doctor first and be sure to ask about any allergies your child might have. Unless your child regularly experiences digestive issues or an enzyme has been ordered by a doctor, we don’t generally recommend this product for your little ones.
