Green algae produces high levels of astaxanthin, a highly bioavailable antioxidant similar to beta-carotene. One study of human skin cells has shown that astaxanthin may help lessen hyperpigmentation in response to inflammatory chemicals that can be released by UV exposure. Astaxanthin is also being researched for its potential to help slow or reduce issues like moisture loss, rough skin, and the appearance of aging in skin.
