Advanced plant-based DHA Omega-3 for higher bioavailability and lower environmental impact

AvailOM 50 High DHA Algae Powder

DHA is an essential fatty acid that makes up ~27% of the adult cerebral cortex of the brain! Studies suggest that DHA has an important role in optimal fetal neurodevelopment, as well as in the healthy transmission of neurotransmitters like serotonin. DHA is also the most abundant omega 3 in the visual system, and healthy levels of DHA are associated with fewer symptoms of dry eyes as well as reduced risk of macular degeneration.†

Frequently Asked

Why are marine sources of omega-3 DHA better than land-based sources (e.g. flaxseed, rapeseed, chia, and walnut oils)?

Omega-3 from marine-based sources (e.g. algae, fish & krill) are high in DHA content. Land-based sources like flaxseed and chia do not contain much or any DHA. Instead, they contain ALA (α-linolenic acid). Research has shown only 3-5% of ALA gets converted into DHA, the omega-3 fatty acid that our bodies readily use.

Is Head & Heart safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

We always recommend speaking with a healthcare professional before introducing any supplement during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, but doctors generally recommend taking omega-3 supplements during pregnancy because it supports healthy neurodevelopment. DHA supplementation during pregnancy is associated with less risk of preterm birth as well as giving birth to a baby with a larger head circumference and birth weight.†

Is Head & Heart appropriate for kids?

We recommend speaking with a doctor before giving Head & Heart to kids. The FDA does not have recommended amounts of DHA for kids to take each day, but the European Food Safety Authority recommends that kids ages 2-18 have 250mg DHA each day. One of our capsules would provide 250mg.

Is Head & Heart tested for heavy metals?

Yes. We make products that are undeniably clean, so that you and your families can trust that you’re getting the highest-quality nutritional products on the market. And we’re transparent about it, too. You can read all about our testing standards and view our Certificates of Analysis.

How much iodine is in a serving of Head and Heart?

We do not standardize for iodine content in Head and Heart, but due to the nature of our source (microalgae harvested in an enclosed system, not wild harvested), there should be no significant amount of iodine in the product, unlike for example, seaweed. The serving size of our product is also low (only 1.05g).

However, please be sure to consult with your doctor if you are on a low-iodine diet.

Why is the DHA in powder form? How is this different from taking an oil-based DHA?

Oil-based DHA supplements are more common because DHA is a fatty acid and naturally mixes well with fats and oils. Our DHA is a powder: the DHA extracted from the algae is mixed with lysine (an amino acid) to form a salt, that is dried to a powder.

Why take a powder DHA? Because DHA is an unstable molecule - it’s easy for DHA to go rancid when in an oil form. This process of creating a powder allows the DHA to be more stable over time (for 4 years, in fact). That means that when you take a powder DHA, you get the fresh, healthy benefits that you’re looking for!

Studies also suggest that our powder DHA is 5x more bioavailable than oil-based, standard DHA supplements, and doesn’t have to be taken with food in order to be absorbed. That means that our DHA is the most convenient, reliable source of DHA you can find.
