  • Benefits

Studies suggest that 42% of US adults have low Vitamin D levels [1] — spending time in the sun isn’t cutting it. Vitamin D deficiency may trigger headaches, muscle soreness, and fatigue [2], as well as immune system issues like frequent illness [3] or autoimmune disease [4]. On the other hand, having sufficient Vitamin D may help to reduce anxiety symptoms [5].†

Supplementing with Vitamin D3 is the safest, easiest way to increase your Vitamin D intake and avoid issues associated with deficiency.†

  • How & When to take

Take your Vitamin D with breakfast. Better yet: aim to enjoy your Vitamin D alongside some healthy fat (like nut butter or avocado) to help your body better absorb it. Swallow whole (we made these tiny!), crush into a smoothie, or dice with a pill cutter.

We recommend taking your Vitamin D early in the day. It may not be the case for you, but some research suggests Vitamin D at night may interfere with your sleep.

The cleaner source of Vitamin D3

Many Vitamin D3 supplements are made from the grease secreted from sheep's wool that’s processed to produce synthetic Vitamin D3. In contrast, our USDA Organic Vitamin D3 Tablets are made sustainably — and simply — from lichen, a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and an alga. These little lichens are one of the only plant-based sources of the more highly bioavailable Vitamin D3. Scientists think that these lichens create Vitamin D3 in response to UVB exposure, the same way that our skin creates Vitamin D from the sun [6].

Ingredients list
  • Organic Sunflower Lecithin

    Organic Sunflower Lecithin

    Helianthus

Our lecithin is pressed from dried sunflower, and is organic and non-GMO (which is in contrast to most supplements that use the often genetically-modified soy lecithin). This emulsifier helps to hold our Vitamin D tablets together. And, because it contains essential fatty acids, our lecithin has the added benefit of supporting the absorption of Vitamin D, which is a lipophilic vitamin that mixes and dissolves best with fats rather than water.

  • Organic Tapioca Maltodextrin

    Organic Tapioca Maltodextrin

    Maltodextrin

We use a natural water-based enzyme process to create tapioca maltodextrin from organic, non-GMO tapioca. We love this form of maltodextrin because it's unlike common forms that are made from GMO corn or wheat treated with heat and acids. Molecularly, maltodextrin is a polysaccharide made from naturally occurring starches in food. We use our tapioca version to help prevent caking in the process of forming the tablet.

  • Vitamin D3 from Lichen

    Vitamin D3 from Lichen

    Lichen

Lichens are a complex life form consisting of a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and an alga. Lichens are a rare, plant-based source of Vitamin D3, the biologically active form of vitamin D. Most Vitamin D supplements are either animal-based or include the cheaper Vitamin D2. Studies have shown that Vitamin D3 may be more effective than D2 in raising and maintaining healthy serum Vitamin D levels.

Frequently asked questions

  • Sol Food is safe to take by those who are actively trying to conceive, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding, but we always recommend speaking with your doctor before adding a supplement to your routine during pregnancy. Studies suggest that people who supplement with 4,000 IU/day of vitamin D during pregnancy may have the best pregnancy outcomes, including a lower risk of preeclampsia [8]. Adequate levels of vitamin D are needed to pass vitamin D to your infant through breastmilk [9].

  • For children above the age of 9, one tablet of Sol Food is safe to take because the safe upper limit of vitamin D is the same as in adults (4,000 IU/day) [10]. Please check with a doctor before using Sol Food as a supplement in children under the age of 9, and be sure to ask about any allergies your child might have.

What to expect

After a few doses you see improvements in your energy† and mood† as your body’s Vitamin D levels begin to rise. Over time you’re supporting stronger bones,† heart health,† and a robust immune system.† This is why it’s one of our favorite supplements!

Ingredient Spotlight

D3 is the form of Vitamin D that your body most easily converts to active Vitamin D in the body. However, many other Vitamin D supplements use a form called D2, which is less effective [7]. Lichen is a rare, plant-based source of Vitamin D3, and is the best way to get the benefits of your Vitamin D.
